The regular season comes to an end as the Buffs takedown the Colby Eagles 39-25.
The season has been full of hardships for the Buffs with illness and injuries making it tough for them to take the win.
Steven Sellers, who is usually in at 106 pounds, had to step up into 113 pounds as sophomore Silas Pineda missed weight by two pounds.
Sellers beat his opponent in a 9-0 major decision over Colby’s Wyatt Tubbs.
“I think the team has struggled with our injuries,” Alex Rodriguez, sophomore, said. “Many of the injuries have been season ending and have set us back a lot as we have had to try and find someone solid to replace them.”
Head Coach Carlos Prieto has been ill for over a week now and assistant head coach Paul Lappin has had to step in.
“This was a hard match to prepare for,” Lappin said. “Everybody is looking forward to next week.”
Hopes are set high for the Buffs as they head into the regional tournament this weekend.
“I hope to to win the regional tournament and going as the top seed in my weight,” Rodriguez said. “ I hope to try new things that I have not tried in the past tournaments.”
Andrew Garcia won his match against Colby wrestler, Kurt Schroeder, 12-1.
Garcia hopes to beat a wrestler from Manhattan because they won 6A state last year.
With the season being tough the Buffs aren’t seen as well by others as they have been in past years.
“I think the team has felt underrated,” Garcia said. “We are all motivated to get back on top.”
The Buffs will be competing in the Regional tournament Feb. 16 an 17.
