The Buffalo girl’s golf team earns the win in Western Athletic Conference. The Garden City Buffs have six golfers. Alyssa McMillan was WAC player of the year, Elena Lemke placed 2nd, Grace Yi was honorable mention in WAC, Ashtyn Turrentine and Emma Kells finished just on the outside for honorable mention while only playing competitive golf for 14 months.”Rian linenburger a sophomore has improved more than any golfer I’ve seen in such short time, with a bright future coming for her” Trenton Specht coach said. The buffs have improved tremendously since the beginning of the year each and every day. One of the best meets the Buffalo golfers have been to would be the one they played in Hutchinson taking fourth place. It wasn’t their highest finish of the year nor their lowest. At most recent meet the Buffs placed first. It secured WAC for the golfers and they had shot their second best score of the year in tough conditions.
Having downfalls during the season are harsh but the buffs got through them. The buffalo golfers had a downfall where they didn’t get their shirts in time for pictures but still looked nice in last year’s shirts in this years picture. Coach Specht compared the golf team from this year to previous years and said “this years team is much younger when it came to varsity experience but I think they have matched the expectations and have worked hard to win WAC again and hopefully regionals.”
Emma Kells health and trade junior said that she had never picked up a golf club until last year, and that it was challenging trying to learn how to golf when it was already in season, but that she had practiced over the summer and has improved. Emma Kells had said she will definitely continue to play golf throughout her life but she doesn’t think she will play it as a college sport. As golf’s season is coming to an end Kells said, “In my own opinion I think the team has done really well this year, placing in at least the top five in every tournament, so I’m super proud.” Her favorite quote that coach Prieto always says is “if it’s breezy swing easy.”
Regionals was held at Buffalo Dunes golf course in Garden City Kan. Junior Alyssa Mcmillen took first place with a score of 83. Senior Elena Lemke took third with a score or 93 and junior Grace Yi finished sixth with a 102. Junior Emma Kells took eighth place with a score of 109. To round out the Buffaloes senior Ashtyn Turrentin took tenth with a score of 110 and sophmore Rian Linenberger shot a 138. The team won regionals with a team score of 387.
The golf team will go and compete in the state championship next Monday at Salina municipal golf course.
