Free ACT opportunity for all

Emily Ortiz Sugar Beet staff reporter The buffs boys swim team made a splash in Manhattan, Kan. The boy swimmers cut lots of time off of many of their races. They are working hard to keep working hard towards getting better.

Wrestling takes down competition

Buff bowlers’ season rolls on

Buffalo bowling strikes out, in a good way, on Jan. 31 at their Liberal dual along with the Campus Invitational on Feb. 2. The Buffalo girls’ varsity took all 11 WAC (Western Athletic Conference) point at their dual against Liberal at Hard Rock Lanes.

Girls’ basketball on a fast break

The Lady Buffs are making their way through the season, being lead by varsity leading scorer Elyssa Salazar, health academy senior. “The team has been great, we all work together and try to figure out each other’s roles on the court,” Salazar said. “The season has gone better than I expected it to be for myself.”

Boys’ basketball fall short in OT

February, the month known for pink and red hearts, more like the month of high school basketball. The 2018-19 Buffaloes (boys) are coming off two wins this weekend beating both Guymon and Hays, and a loss to Dodge for an overall record of 11 wins and four losses.

Students upset over second year without dance

The tradition surrounding dances at Garden City High School is that there is no tradition. From Sadie Hawkins style homecomings to a spring luau, each year brings a new twist on the age-old tradition of school dances. Last year, however, GCHS kept the festivities to a minimum with only a casual fall homecoming dance and prom. This year, students can expect the same. There will be no dance to round off homecoming week this winter.

Buffs gear up for winter homecoming

This time of year has come back around and the Homecoming festivities are back in full effect. The fifth hour student council team is in charge of winter homecoming spirit week advised by Sandra Naeve and Elizabeth Alfeo. Spirit week is from Feb. 4 – 8 and has a lot of exciting student activities planned. This is the first year for both Naeve and Alfeo to be advising the homecoming planning.

Forty years of keeping the hallways clean

Juan Lozoya has been on staff for the school district for many years now. Lozoya started off his career working at Kenneth Henderson (KH) as a night custodian. He worked at KH for 27 years before getting the job at the high school. Lozoya enjoyed spending a career around students.

Season-long goals exceeded, Buffs’ boys swimmers head to 6A state

In just its second season of existence after more than two decades without a program, the Garden City High School boys swimming team will cap off its successful 2018-19 season on Friday, with hopes of qualifying for Saturday’s finals of the Class 6A State Championships.
