McMillen tied 2nd, Lady Buffs team tied 4th after Day 1 of 6A state golf; boys soccer ends winless streak

BUFFS ROUNDUP: Monday, Oct. 21, 2019

GIRLS GOLF

Senior Alyssa McMillen and her Lady Buffs golf teammates battled high wind in excess of 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph on Monday on Day 1 of the Class 6A state golf tournament at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson.

McMillen, who had shot a 73 earlier in the season during the Hutchinson Invitational on the same course, shot a 9-over-par 80 in Monday’s first 18-hole round of the two-day, 36-hole tournament. This is the first year for the new format to be implemented from 18 to 36 holes.

She is tied with Victoria Klausner of Olathe Northwest, 3 shots behind leader Quincy Hepler of Shawnee Mission East, the lone player to break 80 in the inclement weather conditions.

The Lady Buffs team, meanwhile, shot a four-person score of 377 and was tied for fourth with Topeka-Washburn Rural and made the cut to the final day as the 12-team field was trimmed to the lowest 6 team totals. Shawnee Mission East led the team chase with 343, Mill Valley was second at 363 and Blue Valley High School in third at 372. So the Buffs, with a strong final day on Tuesday, could challenge for the top 3 trophies.

Ryann Warren was next low for the Lady Buffs with a 95, Grace Yi close behind with a 97, and Rian Linenberger was the final counting score with a 105. Emma Kells had a 111. Allie Sandoval was unable to make the trip with the team due to illness so the Buffs were playing with just five contestants.

In Tuesday’s final round, the Lady Buffs were scheduled to tee off mid-to-late morning, with Kells teeing off at 10:40 a.m., Linenberger at 10:50, Yi at 11:00, Warren at 11:10 and McMillen at 11:20, all going off the No. 10 tee.

The top 3 teams will earn trophies while the top 20 individual finishers will receive medals.

BOYS SOCCER

The scoring drought and winless streak for the Garden City Buffaloes boys soccer team came to an end on Monday, with Senior Night being the big breakout for the team, defeating Thomas More Prep-Marian of Hays, 10-1, at Buffalo Stadium.

The Buffs, who closed out their regular season with a 7-8-1 record, got five goals in each of the two halves of play and didn’t yield at goal to the Monarchs until the 77th minute with the game out of reach. The Buffs had been winless in their last six outings.

David Hernandez scored the first two goals for the Buffs, those coming in the eighth and 10th minutes of the first half. Christian Hernandez made it 3-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute while Leo Hernandez, who assisted David Hernandez’ first goal, put the ball in the net in the 28th minute and Hassan Ismail closed out the opening 40 minutes with a goal in the 30th minute to make it 5-0 at intermission.

The Buffs continued their offensive barrage in the final half, getting goals from Leo Hernandez (52nd), Ismail (68th), Jiovani Munoz (74th), Moses Lares (77th) and Jairo Carrillo (79th). TMP got its lone goal in the 77th minute from Brady Kreutzer.

Garden City finished with 24 shots on goal with TMP’s keeper recording 11 saves. The Monarchs had just three shots with the Buffs getting one save.

The Buffs will now await the Class 6A regional pairings to determine their opponent and site local for the opening round next week.
