The final two remaining former Garden City High School golfers saw their hopes of making a deep run at the 110th Kansas Amateur Championship swept aside on Friday at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan.

First, it was current GCHS girls/boys coach Trent Specht that was eliminated in the Friday second round of matches, falling 4 and 3 to Andrew Beckler of Topeka.

Then, after surviving a big scare with a 1-up, 19-hole victory in the second round, Sion Audrain went down to defeat at the hands of Jared Helin of Manhattan in the Sweet 16 round Friday afternoon by the score of 1-down.

Audrain, the only GCHS golfer to claim a pair of Class 6A state individual titles (2017/2019), was trying to advance to Sunday’s championship match after claiming the 2018 Kansas Am title. Audrain was 3-up after 10 holes against Helin but lost the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th holes to fall, 1-down.

In his morning match against Bradley Lane of Lawrence, Audrain found himself 3-up through 13 holes, winning just one of the remaining five holes while Lane won four of those to send the match into sudden death. Audrain won on the 19th hole, making 4 to Lane’s 5 to advance to Friday’s Sweet 16 round.

Former Buff Sean Thayer, a 1999 Kansas Amateur champion, lost his first round of match play on Thursday while another ex-Buffalo, Logan Durst, did not make match play.
